Thodoris Papaloukas

Thodoris Papaloukas is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Greek—and European—basketball history. He was born in Athens on May 8, 1977, and built an exceptional career as a playmaker known for his vision, leadership, and ability to elevate every team he played for.

He began his career at a young age with Ethnikos Ellinorossōn, then played for Ampelokipoi (1995–1997) and Dafni (1997–1999). In 1999 he joined Panionios, and in 2001 he moved to Olympiacos. In 2002 he signed with CSKA Moscow, where he played until the summer of 2008, before returning to Olympiacos. During the 2011–2012 season he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv, and in December 2012 he returned to CSKA Moscow, finishing his career at the end of that season.

Papaloukas was also a key figure for the Greek National Team during one of its most successful eras. He won gold at EuroBasket 2005 and was named to the All-Tournament Team. In 2006, he helped Greece win silver at the FIBA World Cup (Japan) and again earned a place on the tournament’s All-Tournament Team. He also helped Greece to 4th place at EuroBasket 2007 and 5th place at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

He holds the title of EuroLeague Legend—alongside other icons of the sport—and is the only Greek player to have been named FIBA Europe Player of the Year (2007). Over his career, he won two EuroLeague titles and multiple domestic trophies, including major success with CSKA Moscow and titles with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
